President’s Message

    November 2017

I want to start this month by offering heartfelt apologies to our members for the consternation the processes for PIF are causing you. We are working out the bugs in the process and as we identify them, we can fine tune our service to the membership. Please continue to give us feedback as to how PIF can best work to serve you.

Our NSC and EPC are to be commended for their efforts in bringing an opening proposal to our members at the BUGM. The preparation to get our Local to this point involves countless hours of hard work and we are thankful to have such a knowledgeable group to bring our interests forward. Thank you to office staff and Executive for their efforts in organizing the evening.

Congratulations to our members and those from other employee groups who were recipients of Shepherd Leadership Awards. These awards reflect on the job all of us do for the students we teach and the support we show each other as a team to deliver Catholic Education. Thank you to colleagues who took the time to put forth the nominees. I encourage members to seek out others avenues to have colleagues recognized for the efforts they make for the profession.

Speaking of Catholic Education, I want to remind the members to be informed of the issues as we go forward. There are plenty of opinions being shared in a variety of media. The one constant for us as teachers is the responsibility we have to teach curriculum as presented to us by Alberta Education. Our Policy and Resolutions committee are working to prepare for ARA (Annual Representatives Assembly) in May 2018 to bring Local views forward.

The time ahead will present many challenges for us as Catholic educators. We will be pulled in many directions and will no doubt feel challenged to make choices supporting our faith and our membership in the ATA. There are plenty of resources for you to refer to as we go forward. I encourage you to seek out a variety of sources to assist yourself and your colleagues.

Locally I suggest you keep up to date by reading The Carillon and what our Bishop as spiritual leader in the diocese has to share. Both the ATA News and Magazine serve us well professionally. Talk to your colleagues. Parish priests can be available to share their insights. Research the internet. You should expect to find a wide variety of thought on issues pertinent to us as teachers in publicly funded Catholic Schools.
